Bluebird Trail Report:
The Innsbrook Bluebird Trail is starting its
27th year of monitoring our local bluebirds.
The original trail was started in 1997 by the
Innsbrook Garden Club. It started with just
12 nest boxes. We now monitor over 170
nest boxes each week. There are 20 faithful
monitors reporting each week of the breeding
season. Last year, our bluebirds edged 834
chicks and since 1997, we have edged 12,247
chicks!
This year, our birds are o to an amazing start
with a reported 88 nests containing 246 eggs
and 12 chicks have already hatched. They have
never started this strongly before, it should be
an awesome season.
If you would like to join in the fun, installed
nest boxes are available for a $60 donation
to the Innsbrook Bluebird Trail. For more
information, please contact Shirley at:

IBK Fishing Club Tips
When shing for bedding bass, the indirect
approach is best. Bass come shallow to spawn.
The sh have been known to spawn in as little
as one foot of water. Although an angler with
polarized glasses may be able to see the sh,
casting right at them will not often produce
bites. The sh are likely to ee an invasive lure.
The right approach is to sh on the edges of
the nests. Move lures slowly and target them
about a foot away from the sh. It may take
multiple casts, but he bass will react. Often the
bump the lure or briey mouth it to move it
away from their nests. Once the sh engages
the lure, instead of eeing from it, you’ll have
them.

NATURE NOTES
2024 “Cicada-geddon”
This spring, billions of cicada beetles will
chorus together as two broods emerge
from their years-long slumber. With the
longest lifespan of any insect, periodical
cicadas are native to Missouri. The
broods — groups of cicadas that share
the same emergence years — will appear
in 18 Midwestern states in late April and
early May. This year, Brood XIII, which
comes out every 17 years, and Brood
XIX, which comes out every 13 years, will
join together in the magical display of
emerging together this spring right in our
backyards.
The last time this historic event took
place was when Thomas Jefferson was
president, decades before Missouri
statehood. The next overlapping event
will be in the year 2245.
For the most part, most Missourians will
only experience Brood XIX, the Great
Southern Brood, which last appeared in
Missouri in 2011. Those in northeastern
Missouri near the Illinois border might
see – and hear – both broods. The
synchronized male singing can be louder
than a jet engine.
Cicada nymphs emerge when the soil
warms to 64 degrees and dig their way
out of the ground. They subscribe to
the “safety in numbers” approach and
emerge all at once. They climb trees,
fence posts or anything vertical before
shedding their hard skins. Then they
head to treetops to mate, lay their eggs
and die within four to six weeks.
Expect to see cicadas after a spring rain,
and expect to see a lot of them – as many
as 1.5 million per acre. This creates a
feeding frenzy for predators and litter so
heavy that the sidewalks and highways
may need shoveling. Cicadas, while loud
and messy, are harmless to humans and
their pets. They don’t sting or bite.
University of Missouri Extension
Horticulture Specialist, Tamra Reall,
warns against using pesticides that will
harm birds and beneficial insects such
as butterflies, bees and moths. If there
is concern about new trees or bushes,
protect them with a loose cover of
cheesecloth.
