HOUSING REGISTRATION GUIDE
HOUSING REGISTRATION GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
The Housing Registration process is how returning
undergraduate students request on-campus housing
for the upcoming academic year. Housing
Registration begins in February 2024 for GW
students currently enrolled in Spring 2024. Housing
assignments are not given on a first-come, first-serve
basis, and there is no incentive to register for
housing quickly. All students are encouraged to take
their time and be thoughtful when completing their
Housing Registration. This year we have worked to
make housing registration as smooth as possible
and provide students with choice.
The deadline for the Housing Registration
process is Wednesday, March 13.
CAMPUS LIVING & RESIDENTIAL EDUCATION
SPECIALIZED COMMUNITY
LIVING
All specialized student group members are required
to participate in the General Housing Registration
period. As part of their registration, members may
indicate their desire to live in the designated
housing location for each group.
These groups include:
Fraternity & Sorority Chapters
District House Affinities
University Honors Students (optional)
APPROVED DSS HOUSING-BASED ACCOMMODATIONS
If you have an approved Disability Support Services (DSS) housing-based
accommodation(s) and are currently living in a room that meets your housing-based
accommodation(s) and is also eligible for Room Renewal, you may participate in Room
Renewal and retain your current spring 2024 room assignment for the 2024-2025 academic
year. If you are not eligible for or choose to not participate in Room Renewal, you may
register for housing during the General Housing Registration period: Feb 28 - March 13.
Select priority will be given to students with DSS housing-based accommodations when
housing assignments are made by Campus Living & Residential Education (CLRE.)

Campus Living & Residential Education (CLRE) is not currently able
to offer housing to graduate, law, medical, and professional
students. Current and prospective graduate students seeking
housing opportunities near GW can explore the options through

Studying Abroad
in Fall 2024
You Have Confirmed Study Abroad Plans: Do NOT register for
2024-2025 housing if you know for sure you will be studying
abroad in fall 2024. You can register for Spring 2025 housing
during Fall 2024.
You Are Considering Or Unsure: Register for 2024-2025 housing;
then cancel 2024-2025 housing once your study abroad
plan/program is confirmed. You can register for Spring 2025
housing during Fall 2024.
Studying Abroad

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
Our FAQs can be viewed online at our website. If you still have questions about
registering for housing, please call our office at 202-994-2552, we are open Monday
through Friday 9 am - 5 pm (EST), or email us at living@gwu.edu.
RESIDENCY EXEMPTIONS
Rising Third- & Fourth-Year Students:
In 2023, we removed the third-year on-campus residency requirement. Third-year
students are not required to live on campus. Rising third- and fourth-year students
are not required to submit exemption requests.
If rising third- and fourth-year students want to live on campus they are required to
actively register for housing during the Housing Registration process.
Rising 2nd-Year Students:
For students eligible to apply for an exemption, the Residency Exemption Request
Form will be available via the GW Home Portal.
Supporting documentation must be uploaded at the time of submission.
The request form is open throughout the spring semester.
Students With Current Exemptions On File:
Students with a residency exemption on file may continue to live off campus.
If a student with a current exemption on file wants to live on campus, they may
rescind their exemption and are required to actively register for housing during
General Housing Registration.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS THE HOUSING
REGISTRATION DEADLINE? MARCH 13
The Housing Registration process is designed to give students lengthy periods of time to
make decisions about their housing; however, we know things happen and a student may
miss one or more deadlines. Students who miss the registration deadline will still receive
housing, but there is a possibility of being assigned last or placed on a waitlist if needed.
The deadline for the Housing Registration process is Wednesday, March 13.
DO I WANT TO LIVE ON CAMPUS IN 2024-2025?
HOUSING WAITLIST FOR 2024-2025
Campus Living & Residential Education does not anticipate the development of a waitlist
for the 2024-2025 academic year on-campus housing. If a waitlist is necessary, students
who are placed on the waitlist will be notified via email about the waitlist process.

COMPLETE ROOMMATE MATCHING QUESTIONNAIRE
You will be prompted to respond to questions about your lifestyle, such as the times you
typically wake up and go to bed, and your preferred room temperature. Your responses to
the questionnaire will aid in roommate matching during the next step. All students will
complete this step, even those who already know who they would like to live with.
Answer the prompts as honestly and accurately as possible to increase your likelihood
of finding roommates or suitemates with similar habits and lifestyles.
You will be asked to indicate your preference for the potential gender identities of
prospective roommate(s). If you do not create or join a roommate group, we will make
every effort to use your preferences to make your housing assignment.
Your answers will be visible to others when they find you in the roommate search results.

WHO DO I WANT TO LIVE WITH?
Before creating a group during housing registration,
communicate with your desired roommates and
determine who will be the roommate group leader,
then follow the steps below.
The chosen group leader will click “Create New
Group” and create a Group Name and
Password.
1.
The group leader shares the Group Name and
Password they created, in Step 1, with their
desired roommates.
2.
After desired roommates complete the initial
steps of their housing registration, roommate
matching questions, and roommate search
profile, they will click “Join a Group with Group
Name and Password” and enter the Group
Name and Password that was shared with them
by the group leader.
3.
The chosen group leader will click “Accept
Request” after each of their desired roommates
joins the group.
4.
KEYS TO SUCCESS
Do not share the Group
Name and Password with
people you do not want to
live with.
A group must be created
before desired roommates
are able to join a group with
a Group Name and
Password.
Only accepted roommate
group requests will be
considered when CLRE
makes housing assignments.
5
The deadline for creating roommate
groups is Wednesday, March 13.
Await Responses:
If your roommate request is
accepted, you will form an
automated roommate group and
be notified via email. If your
roommate request is denied you
will be notified via email and may
enter the search process again.
Click “Search for Roommates by
Roommate Matching Questions”
1.
Fill in Roommate Matching Questions:
Answer how you would want your ideal
roommate to answer the roommate
matching questions.
2.
Send Roommate Requests: Read
through your search results and select
“Add to Group” to send a roommate
request to people you would
potentially like to live with. You may

DONT KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH?
If you do not know who you want to live with and did not create or join a roommate

ROOM RENEWAL
The second phase of our housing registration process begins with Room Renewal or
choosing to rank room types of where you want to live for next year. Room Renewal allows
all students living in eligible residence halls to choose to return to their current housing
assignment for the 2024-2025 academic year. Only students living in eligible halls will be
prompted to complete this step. If you do not wish to renew your current housing
assignment, you will wait to complete the General Housing Registration phase on February
28 and receive a different housing assignment for the 2024-2025 academic year.
CLRE cannot guarantee a student will be placed in their current room if the room
renewal step is not completed by February 21.

REGISTRATION FEB 28 - MARCH 13
WHERE DO I WANT TO LIVE?
RANK YOUR ROOM TYPE
During General Housing Registration you will rank a list of up to 25 residence halls with
number 1 being your top preference. This ranked preference list is will be used to assign
you to a hall and room size as high as possible on your list. To help you effectively rank
residence hall and room types in your housing registration, view the available upperclass
residence halls in the chart below.
Keep in mind the size of your roommate group and their class year(s) when ranking
building and room size preferences. CLRE will prioritize keeping roommate groups
together (not splitting them up) over rankings of building and room sizes, with our
understanding that who you live with is more important than where you live.
While CLRE does everything possible to ensure students are assigned to rooms near the
top of their preference list, each year demand for specific halls and room sizes can
outnumber the availability of those locations and room sizes. You should prepare for
the possibility of being assigned to a hall and room size lower on your preference list.
Single occupancy room types with private bathrooms are not eligible for ranking, as
they are typically reserved for students with Disability Support Services (DSS) housing-
based accommodations for that specific room type. If you receive an approved housing-
based accommodation for a single with a bathroom, CLRE will use hall preferences in
your housing registration to assign you to a single with a private bathroom.

WHAT IS MY MEAL PLAN?
SELECT A MEAL PLAN FOR 2024-2025
At GW, our Meal Plans are designed to fit your unique needs and provide a complementary
experience while attending GW. All students who live on campus are required to have a
meal plan. You will select your meal plan for the 2024-2025 academic year as part of your
housing registration. Meal plans for 2024-2025 can be viewed on the GWU Dining
Website starting on February 5 and the options available vary by class year.
SIGN THE HOUSING LICENSE AND DINING PLAN
AGREEMENT
The final step of housing registration is to sign the 2024-2025 Housing License And Dining
Plan Agreement. The agreement outlines what you agree to in order to live in a GW
residence hall while using GW dining facilities.
The deadline for Housing Registration is Wednesday, March 13.
WHAT IS MY FALL 2024 ASSIGNMENT?
In late March, all students who registered for housing by March 13 at 4:00 PM EST
will receive their specific housing assignment, including the residence hall, room
number, and information about any specific roommates (if applicable).
SUMMER 2024 HOUSING REGISTRATION
Summer 2024 housing registration will open sometime in March 2024. CLRE
encourages students to begin planning for their summer housing needs. CLRE will
accept late registration for GW students to stay in housing for the summer, but
housing options may be more limited the later a student registers. In Summer 2024,
most residence hall rooms will be filled at a maximum room capacity of one person
per bedroom.
