PERSONAL ENRICHMENT
Logan Mason began his journey with
the RCC Office of Career & Transition
Services (OCATS) in the WIOA Youth
Program Fall 2021. At the time, he was
working as a dishwasher at a local
restaurant. By the end of Summer
2022, Logan had earned multiple
welding credentials including the
highest, ASME IX Pipe Welding. He
gained employment with a local
company, Curtis Contracting, as a
welder and then moved on to join the
team at Halliburton.
Logan had the opportunity to work
with a career coach, gain access to
funding for training, and complete
an assessment of his barriers,
strengths, and interests. He credits
these supports with helping him
strategically plan and execute a
roadmap for success. When he
graduated high school, he was
unsure which direction he wanted to
go. He is now thriving in his chosen
career pathway and enjoys inspiring
other students.
“My time at RCC was amazing and
I had so much fun in the welding
program,” said Mason.
Travis Payne came to RCC in the
Spring of 2022 seeking CDL training
and licensure through the Workforce
Innovation and Opportunity Act
(WIOA) Program. Once enrolled, he
began his training by the end of May
and completed all requirements
by July, securing both his Class A
licensure as well as full-time work as
a commercial driver.
Travis accepted a job offer from
Schneider National, which sent him
over-the-road, or what most of us
would call cross-country driving.
Typical success story, right? Nope,
there’s more! During his time of
follow-up, his WIOA case manager
kept in contact with him for support
and guidance if needed. Travis
always responded with frequent
updates on his career progression.
During their most recent follow-
up, Travis had this to say to his case
manager: “I would like to thank you
for everything you have done for
me. You really changed my life. I’m
still with Schneider and I’m now
a training engineer and take new
drivers on the road and teach them
how to be successful.
Travis Payne’s success is a testament
not only to his hard work and
dedication but also to the incredible
support he received from staff
during his time at RCC, allowing him
to change his life for the better.

Chad Brown, a
junior at King
George High
School, is also
enrolled in
college courses
through
RCC’s Dual
Enrollment
program.
When Brown
graduates
from high
school in
2025 he also will have
earned an Associate Degree in Arts
and Sciences with a specialization in Psychology,
plus more credits toward a Bachelor’s Degree. He is
also in the Teachers for Tomorrow program, a Virginia
Department of Education dual enrollment program
designed to introduce high school students to the field
of education through hands-on experiences focused on
teaching.
For Brown, dual enrollment is an affordable way to get
ahead on his education goals and prepare him for the
future. “My personal goals include a lot of education
beyond high school. Dual enrollment allows me to be
emotionally and mentally prepared for the educational
requirements at the collegiate level,” said Brown. “I
believe a lot of people struggle with the adjustment
and it causes a great deal of stress. By getting started
on college classes in high school, the adjustment period
is smoother and not as overwhelming.”
One class currently making an impact on Brown is U.S.
History (HIS 121 and 122), taught by dual enrollment
professor Jessica Wilkerson. According to Brown, she
has a deep knowledge and understanding of U.S.
History and education and teaches in a way that is
engaging. “She challenges us and makes sure that we
understand the topics while being fair and working
with us,” said Brown. “She has never failed to answer
questions and help not only with subject content and
history but regarding life and our journey.”
Brown has his future goals set and plan laid out to one
day be a teacher and part-time practicing counselor/
psychologist. His plans include two Master’s degrees,
one in education and one in clinical psychology and
eventually a Doctorate in educational leadership.
“Dual enrollment classes are very affordable. Truly the
school, my family, and RCC have set me up for success,
Brown concluded.
