A MESSAGE FROM
OUR LEADERSHIP
Here, We Grow.
Jim Scherer,
President & CEO, YMCA SOUTHCOAST
Geoffrey Swett,
Board Chair, YMCA SOUTHCOAST
Dear Friends,
2018 proved to be a powerful growth year for YMCA SOUTHCOAST (YSC). With over 160 years of
service to the south coast, the Y continues to evolve to meet the growing needs of those we serve.
In 2018 YSCs Membership overall grew by 10% with 12% growth in the Family Membership
category affording more families and more people an opportunity to thrive at the Y! To expand
access to our much-needed programs, YSC applied for recognition as a Medicare Supplier for our
Diabetes Prevention Program. This recognition, held by only a handful of Y’s across the country, will
allow YSC to accept Medicare insurance for eligible participants.
Association wide, childcare programs resumed their expansion to support working families.
As we grow, we are developing partnerships with community organizations to secure licensable
childcare space. The 2018 Bell Power Scholars Program, a partnership between YSC and the public
school districts in New Bedford and Fall River, provided educational support and enrichment
activities for 272 young people. Power Scholars’ goal is to address summer learning loss in
elementary and middle school students in New Bedford and Fall River to close the achievement gap.
The 2018 Annual Campaign soared to new heights thanks to the dedication of our volunteers
and staff who worked tirelessly to raise funds to support the work we do in our community. YSC
launched a Membership for All initiative which utilizes Annual Campaign dollars to ensure that being
a part of the Y community is within the nancial reach of ALL of our neighbors.
YSC has evaluated and modernized our operating policies to ensure that we are able to meet the
needs of our growing membership. From our social media and web presence to the internal
processes we use to manage operations, 2018 was a year of growth and modernization.
YSC is poised for a strong future thanks to the support of our volunteers, our community, and our
staff team!

HEALTHY LIVING
AT YMCA SOUTHCOAST IN 2018...
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Youth Development is the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical processes that all
youth uniquely experience... A successful development process fullls children and teens’
innate need to be loved, spiritually grounded, educated, competent, and healthy.
The Y takes a collaborative community approach to support all people in living their healthiest
lives. We continue to offer essential programing to elevate well-being, chronic disease
prevention, and health maintenance for our communities.

MEMBERSHIP
FOR ALL
At the Y, we believe all of our programs and
services should be available to everyone.
In 2018, YMCA SOUTHCOAST launched
“Membership for All. This program offers
an income-based sliding fee scale that is
designed to t the nancial situation of
each individual and family in our community.

thanks to Membership For All.
The 3rd Grade Swim Program offered over 350
students in New Bedford and Wareham valuable
swimming and water safety skills. Our water safety
initiative was developed to give all third graders,
regardless of ability, the opportunity for no-cost
swimming and water safety lessons as part of their
school day.
1,000
familes across the south coast of Massachusetts
had access to food through agencies that
we provided produce to.
YMCA SOUTHCOAST continues our commitment
to alleviate food insecurity in our community. Our New Bedford
and Fall River branches, the heart of our service area, are two of
the ten poorest municipalities in Massachusetts, with poverty
rates double the state average.

US...IS EMPOWERING
“Many mornings I didn’t feel like getting out of bed to exercise,
but I knew the Y’s LIVESTRONG staff would be there for me.
I ended up only missing one class because of my energy level.
Knowing they were there for me meant everything.

LIVESTRONG
AT THE YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week, small-group
program designed for adult cancer survivors who have become chronically fatigued
or de-conditioned from treatment and disease. More than a program, LIVESTRONG
is a community that values healthy families, and supports healthy choices.
The program is offered without cost to the participants.
This 12-month program helps adults at risk for
Type 2 Diabetes reduce their risk for developing the
disease by taking steps to improve overall health and well-being. In 2018,
YMCA SOUTHCOAST welcomed 60 participants who worked together
across our south coast communities in small groups to change their lives.
“YDPP didn’t just help me change my life,
it literally saved my life ”
- YDPP participant

“It is such a joy watching campers grow
into Counselors and Leaders in Training!
They do so well connecting with the
younger kids. They often see themselves
reected in the challenges and successes
of young campers and become role
models and mentors to them.

US...IS A PROMISE
Thank you for inviting me
to Power Scholars,
I love it every day!
10
With the premise that leaders are developed by doing, the Ys Youth and
Government Program’s motto is that “Democracy must be learned by each
generation.” The goal of the program is to create the next generation of
thoughtful, committed, and active citizens.
With this in mind, teens are taught the principles of a democratic society and
are given leadership roles in the models of judicial, legislative and executive
branches of local, state and national government. The program culminates
with teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on
the oor of the legislature.

POWER SCHOLARS
ACADEMY
By expanding after school and summer learning
opportunities, the Y is actively working to positively
impact each individual child and break the
intergenerational cycle of poverty that low
educational attainment brings. Through a strong
partnership with the New Bedford Public Schools,
Fall River Public Schools and BellXcel, participating students
showed grade-equivalent gains of three months in reading and
2.5 months in math on average.
YOUTH SPORTS
PROGRAMS
To ensure that every youth has the opportunity to gain technical skills along
with a sense of achievement, relationships, and belonging, YSC tailors youth
sports programs to meet the communities’ needs. In 2018 YMCA SOUTHCOASTs
Axel Dance Academy, Flag Football, and wrestling leagues were launched.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
YMCA SOUTHCOAST’s
Axel Dance Academy
began
at the Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA in
Swansea. In 2018, Axel Dance Academy
hosted its rst standalone recital with
over 400 audience members in
attendance. Program enrollment
increased from 67 to 100
students in just three
short months.
Bourne Public Schools Staff
trained with Y Camp Staff to integrate summer
camp with their mandated summer service programs.
Students and staff alike were thrilled with the success of
the program and will continue the community partnership.
in 2018
The Gleason Family YMCA
instituted
THE BOURNE INTEGRATED
SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM
and offered life enhancing programming
to 16 students that were in need of year
long services.
12
The Fall River YMCA
collaborated with UMASS Dartmouth
to provide volunteer opportunities in
our Education Achievement Center.
Approximately 25 volunteers participated
each semester and carried out curriculum
set forth by the program director to 130
children in the Ys after school program.
Camp Massasoit welcomed 2643
campers in 2018. Located on beautiful
Mattpoisett Harbor, Camp Massasoit has provided a
premier summer camp experience to generations of
families since 1962. Focused on the development of
our campers, as individuals and as a group,
Camp Massasoit nurtures today’s children
into tomorrows leaders.
The New Bedford YMCA
hosted a record high enrollment of
130 for Youth Basketball League (YBL).
YBL is run and coached by our
incredible parent volunteers with
the support of YSC staff.
The Mattapoisett YMCAs
under new leadership, the Dartmouth YMCA
underwent an innovative reorganization of space that allowed Group Exercise
classes to continue without interruption throughout the Summer months.
In addition to repurposing existing space to better meet the needs of
membership, a relationship was forged with the neighboring school that
allows the Y to utilize the schools space during summer and other
school vacation closures.

OUR ANNUAL
CAMPAIGN
For YMCA SOUTHCOAST,
the Annual Campaign represents the largest

In 2018, our members, friends, businesses,
foundations and the community at large
came together to help exceed our
