School of Nursing
BSN Program Information
Students seeking admission to the School of Nursing apply to Ohio University as Pre-BSN majors
(ND1220) and complete prerequisite courses outlined later in this document. Acceptance into the
Pre-BSN program is selective. During spring semester students meeting all requirements apply for

the opportunity to complete the final three years of the BSN program, graduate, and sit for the
NCLEX licensing exam. Information about the selection process will appear later in this document.
The traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN) provides students with on-campus
classroom lectures and simulation lab activities as well as regionalized clinical experiences. The
BSN program (BS1221) is offered on the Athens, Chillicothe, Southern and Zanesville campuses
with clinical experiences occurring in hospitals and clinics in the southeastern Ohio region. Please
note that students selected for the BSN program will need to provide their own transportation to
clinical sites, and some locations may be approximately an hour-long drive from campus.

SELECTION for BSN MAJOR
Admission into the BSN major (BS1221) is selective and occurs only once a year during the spring
semester. Submission of specified documents as determined by the School of Nursing must be in the
student’s Application File in the respective School of Nursing office on the date/time indicated by each
campus. The School of Nursing will provide information to students about all aspects of the selection
process in a timely manner and will include deadlines for submission of required documentation.
1. Required for BSN program selection consideration:
1.1 Minimum overall grade point average of 2.75.
1.2 Specified program courses have been completed with minimum grade requirements.
1.3 Successful completion of the HESI A2 pre-admission exam. Subjects tested on the exam
include: mathematics, reading, vocabulary, grammar, chemistry, biology, anatomy and
physiology. Information about the HESI A2 testing will be shared with Pre-BSN students
during the school year by the campuses.
1.4 Report of FBI and BCI background checks --- guidelines on how to obtain a background
check will be provided by the School of Nursing offices.
1.5 Fully completed/signed application form to request consideration for admittance to BSN
program (BS1221). Application forms are available from the School of Nursing office on the
campus where you are seeking admission.
Note: Items above (1.1 1.5) must be met/provided by the student in order to be reviewed during the selection process.
1.6 The School of Nursing will run a final DARS report once spring semester grades are
recorded to verify specified program courses have been completed with minimum grade
requirements.
1.7 Upon notification of selection into the BSN program, student must provide report of a
completed physical exam performed within the past 12 months using form provided by
the School of Nursing offices.
1.8 Upon notification of selection into the BSN program, student must provide documentation
of properly completed Mantoux two-step tuberculosis test and completion of any follow-up
recommendations (part of the physical exam report form provided by the School of Nursing
offices).
1.9 Upon notification of selection into the BSN program, student must provide documentation
of the completion of the required immunizations (part of the physical exam report form
provided by the School of Nursing offices).
Note: Items above (1.7 1.9) must be met/provided by the student as instructed in the BSN program admission
invitation. Failure to comply may result in forfeiture of admission status.
2. Criteria the selection committee will consider for selecting individuals for the BSN major:
2.1 Cumulative grade point average across all college coursework.
2.2 Grade point average across the required nine (9) prerequisite courses.
2.3 Scores on the HESI A2 pre-nursing exam.
2.4 Clearance on FBI and BCI background checks completed in the past year.
2.5 Service and work experience within the past three years.
2.6 Completion of all application materials as instructed by the School of Nursing.
Properly completed application files that meet the established requirements will be reviewed by a School
of Nursing selection committee during spring semester. Selection for the BSN program is competitive, and
meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the BSN program. Final selection will
occur after spring semester grades are released. Students will be notified of the committee’s decision as
soon as all grades have been verified. Selected students will start the BSN program at the start of the
subsequent fall semester.

Important Scheduling Guidelines
UC 1900 (Learning Community) is recommended for all Athens campus students. UC 1900 is not
required on the regional campus sites (Chillicothe, Southern, Zanesville).
NRSE 1111 can be taken in fall or spring semester based on course load, but it must be completed
during the first year with a grade B- or above.
The “Elective” course will be required only if students have not earned necessary previous credit hours to
meet 30 credit hours by the end of Year 1. Check with your academic advisor.
Check course offerings for the available BIOS (Microbiology) course selection on your campus.
BSN students must complete an Interprofessional Education (IPE) course requirement. IHS 2220 will
fulfill both the Cross-Cultural Perspectives (2CP) and IPE requirements. There may be other courses that
may also meet the requirements. Check with your academic advisor.
All BSN program prerequisites and related major requirements must be completed with a solid “C” or
better.
All NRSE courses must be completed with an 80% (B-”) or better in order to progress in the BSN
program. The School of Nursing does not “round” points/percentages in determining final course grades.
You MUST meet with your academic advisor or attend a group advising session every semester to
ensure you are meeting all requirements and to be eligible to register.
Please discuss registration questions with your School of Nursing academic advisor before making any
changes to your schedule.
Before registering for any summer courses, you must discuss options with an academic advisor.
Core NRSE courses are scheduled by the School of Nursing and will not be adjusted, except under
extremely extenuating circumstances approved by the BSN Associate Director.
All non-nursing requirements must be completed before fall semester of the final year.
