JOHN PAUL COLLEGE SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all parents and caregivers who have made every effort to
pay school fees. We take no pleasure in asking for school fees but the reality is, we could not
provide the high quality education you have come to expect without those fees. The fees have
been adjusted for 2016 to:
Year 7: $365
Year 8-11: $600
Year 12-13: $800
DIOCESE FEES
As from Term 1 2016 the Attendance Dues rate will be:
Intermediate $426.00 per student per annum [incl GST]
(i.e. $106.00 per term or $8.19 per week)
Secondary $852.00 per student per annum [incl GST]
(i.e. $213.00 per term or $16.38 per week)
Catholic Character Contribution will increase by $5.00 to $45.00 per student per year with a
maximum of $135.00 per family. This is a voluntary donation and these funds are used to
support the delivery of religious education programmes in our schools for which no other funding
is available. Attendance Dues income cannot be used for this purpose.
Please note: A letter to parents advising of these increases will be included with their March
invoice.
God bless

NEWS FROM THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT
2016 John Paul College celebrates the 400
th
Anniversary of William
Shakespeare
2016 commemorates 400 years since the death of William
Shakespeare and the world will be celebrating.
The Drama Department at John Paul College has already planned its
year of commemoration for this very special anniversary. Shakespeare
has given us so much with language, phrases and jokes that we use on
a daily basis. His images and references make up our literary history.
Shakespeare’s themes and issues continue to be universal and
timeless. You never tire of his works as something new is discovered
each time you dip into his text.
Over the years, nine John Paul College drama students have been selected to be part of the New Zealand
team that travels annually to London and Cambridge. 2015 Year 13 Drama Captain Zoe Spence has been
selected to join the national team this year. John Paul College has a very proud record of drama students
selected for this prestigious national team. We wish Zoe well at The Globe Theatre in London.
Our drama students this year will have the opportunity to see and experience live theatre at the Pop-Up
Globe which is being constructed in central Auckland to coincide with the celebrations of the anniversary. It
is a full-scale, temporary, working replica of the second Globe Theatre in London. It will ‘pop up’ and then
literally disappear! This will give our students an exciting intimate experience and a real feeling for the space
for which his plays were written.
Live theatre is a unique experience which cannot be obtained by television or movies, it is important to give
students these opportunities where an audience is in real time and no two performances are exactly the
same.
2016 John Paul College Drama Department Shakespeare commemorative events
12/13 February. Production of Bare the New Zealand award winning play by Toa Fraser at Casa
Blanca theatre. Fundraiser for former John Paul College student Zoe Spence (Year 13 2015) to raise
funds to enable Zoe to travel to The Globe with the New Zealand Shakespeare Team.
John Paul College Drama Department years 12 and 13 will be studying the Elizabethan Theatre form
in class for NCEA Achievement Standards.
John Paul College students attend the Pop Up Globe performance of Romeo and Juliet in Auckland
9 April John Paul College enters both teacher and student directed entries in the regional
Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand - University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.
5/6 August Year 12 and 13 Drama students’ production A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Casa Blanca
theatre.

Dear Parents/ Caregivers,
RE: MATHS BUDDY
The Mathematics Teaching Staff of John Paul College have decided to incorporate the online
Maths Buddy resource as part of the compulsory teaching program for 2016 for year 7. This is
instead of the Mathematics homework book. The website is designed to provide support to
students in their Mathematics learning.
The key features of the Maths Buddy website are:
1. Virtual Tutor: An on-screen lesson for different mathematical concepts with a
pause/rewind/fast forward facility which allows your child to learn and control the lesson at
a pace that suits them or to go over a lesson as many times as they wish.
2. Homework setting: Teachers will be setting homework through the Maths Buddy website.
The homework will be tailored to your child’s ability in Mathematics and all marking of work
is done immediately
3. Progress reports: Parents can receive automatic weekly reports on their child’s programme
use and mathematical progress.
Before access is given to any student, the following acknowledgement form must be filled out and
returned to Mrs Boyce in the accounts office, with a payment of $25. An individual login will be
given to your child giving them access to the entire Maths Buddy program and its improvements
until the end of January 2017. For students who do not have computer access at home, there will
be an opportunity to access Maths Buddy in the library during break times and during the
homework club run by John Paul College on Monday and Wednesday after school.
Please fill in the following notification, and return the portion below the dotted line to school ASAP
in an envelope
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Student Name: _______________________________________. Form Class : _______________
I, ____________________________________________ (Parent/Guardian Name Please Print);

Re: Yr 9 Lake Safety Programme, Monday 15

th
Feb 2016
The above Programme is scheduled to be held at the Blue Lake, Rotorua.
The Lake Safety programme is an opportunity for students to experience a fun, safe
educational day in a lake setting. The Programme is delivered in a structured manner by
qualified instructors, who are usually based at the Rotorua Aquatics Centre but who will be
at the Blue Lake to deliver the programme in a disciplined environment that sees the
students taught lake awareness through a combination of theory and practical
participation.
The programme consists of a water safety programme and a Bushcraft Skills programme.
The students do one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
The morning programme will run at the Blue Lake from 9.30am to 11.30am and the afternoon
programme from 12 Noon to 2.00pm. Mr Kowalewski, the Year 9 Dean will run the Bush craft
Skills programme.
A decision will be made before 8.30am if the weather is unsuitable for safety reasons.
All students and parents assisting with supervision are to meet at the JPC Bus Bay ready to
depart by 8.45am. The bus will return to JPC in the afternoon before 3.05pm
The following classes are scheduled for:
