Butler, Claudio Gomez, Jonathan Rojas, Lisa Clarke, and the rest of the fine team.
I want to thank the English Department, which has served as the home for my research,
starting with my cohort, who served as a source of support for the entirety of my studies—Dr.
Skye Annica, Dr. Kate Bradley, Nikki Cosentino, and Eric Koch. I will pay special thanks to my
academic partner in crime, dear friend, and fellow EOP family member, Laurin Dechae. I send
appreciation to Dr. Jonah Richards, Dr. Mari Christmas, Dr. James Searle, Joshua Keller, Steven
Delmagori, Ben Nadler, and the entire Barzakh team—including Yolande Schutter, Janna
Urschel, Stacie Klinowski, Kennedy Coyne, and last, but certainly not least, Kiana Flores.
I thank all of the professors with whom I have studied, but I will note Dr. Tamika Carey,
Dr. Bret Benjamin, Dr. Martha Rozett, Dr. Lana Cable, and incoming chair Dr. Eric Keenaghan.
Other professors in the department have also supported me in various ways, including Dr. Paul
Stasi, Dr. Wendy Roberts, Dr. Jill Hanifan, and outgoing chair Dr. Charles Shepherdson. I want
to acknowledge current director of graduate studies, Dr. James Lilley, and the former director,
Dr. Jennifer Greiman, who were both invaluable to me in this process. Also, special thanks to the
department’s dedicated staff, Kathleen Cummings, Bianca Hedges, and the late Liz Lauenstein.
Lastly, I will thank my committee for their commitment to me and my project—Dr.
Michael Leong for his thoughtful readings of my work and his thorough attention to detail and
craft; Dr. Glyne Griffith for his reliable presence, sound critiques, and heartfelt encouragement;
and finally, I would like to thank my committee chair, Dr. Derik Smith for being an intellectual
collaborator, a sharp critic, and an expert in understanding my scholarly process and journey.
Without these three scholars by my side, this project would never have come to fruition. I am
grateful for their mentorship and offer a debt of gratitude to each of them.
