Tiny House Mini Village
On August 7th, 2018, Joel Rubenzahl, a consultant from Community Economics,
reached out to SAHA in regards to an empty lot at the corner of Martin Luther King
Jr. Way and 63rd Street in Berkeley. Joel learned that the empty lot was for sale for
$500,000 and he was hoping SAHA or some other local organization would have
the resources to buy and develop it. Eve Stewart, the Vice President of Real Estate
Development at SAHA had the vision of turning this lot into a Tiny House Mini
Village and a community garden for homeless folks; and she assigned this project to
me.
Tiny House Mini Village was an interesting project to work on. To get started, I
researched the setback requirement for this zoning and dierent models of tiny
homes already in use. This helped me to understand how many tiny homes we can
t on this lot and what would be the most ecient model to build. Once I gured
them out, I created a rough drawing of site plan and met with Eve to discuss my
vision. After I received an approval from Eve, I visited the City of Berkeley Planning
Department to see if tiny homes are allowed in this zoning and what the next steps
were if we got an approval. Unfortunately, our vision got turned down because:
- The tiny homes must be anchored to the ground, and cannot be on trailer. Our
vision was to have them on trailer.
- These homes must be declared as emergency homes and are allowed to be on
site for only 180 days or less. We were hoping to have them as permanent
homes.
Although I was sad that this wonderful project could not continue, I was glad to
have given the opportunity to directly manage a mini project on my own. It was a
great learning experience for me.

As a newly graduated student in Urban Studies major
from University of California, Berkeley, I am very
grateful to be one of the 12 graduates from the
inaugural Bay Area Housing Internship Program. This
internship program has successfully provided me a
launching pad into a career in aordable housing
development and project management. In addition,
BAHIP has also introduced me to a completely new
world of networking where I got to work with people
from many dierent elds, and given me an
opportunity to go on this exciting journey with
eleven amazing individuals.
Although it was NPH that created the internship program, however, if it were not for
Satellite Aordable Housing Associates (SAHA), I would have not become a passionate
and knowledgeable houser as I am now. Interning at SAHA was a wonderful
experience for me while I took my baby steps into the aordable housing eld. Not
only did SAHA teach me everything I need to know about the development process,
but this organization also taught me more about diversity, inclusionary, mental health,
and team building - the important lessons for both aordable housing eld and daily
life.
