Dear Families:
Summer is quickly approaching! As in years past, the Cleveland Heights-University
Heights City School District has a summer reading plan for students entering
Kindergarten through 12
th
grade.
Students entering grades K-5 are expected to read a minimum of 100 minutes
per week throughout the summer (which includes reading aloud for younger
students).
Students entering grades 6-8 are expected to read during the summer months
also. The 6
th
grade students will read at least three books - one of which is
Among the Hidden. The 7
th
grade students will read at least three books -
one of which is Wonder. The 8
th
grade students will read a book from either
a list posted on the CH-UH website or a book of their own choosing that
aligns to a particular genre. All students will respond to a writing prompt
when they return to school in August.
Students entering grades 9-12 are expected to read a book of their choice,
then join their grade level class on Google Classrooms and post a required
response. Students taking AP Language and Early College courses have
separate assignments. For information on all high school summer reading
projects, click here: https://sites.google.com/a/chuh.org/summer-reading/
Students entering grades K-5 will record their reading on the Summer Reading Log
located on the back of this letter and available on the CH-UH School District website
(www.chuh.org). During the first week of school, students should give their completed
Reading Log to their teacher. To help your child choose books, a list of suggested titles
is available on the CH-UH School District website under the “Familiestab. Students can
read any material and are not limited to the titles on the provided list. Encourage them to
find something that they want to read. If they can read it or listen to it, it counts!!
Our school district is offering a weekly evening event called “Books-a-Go-Go. The
Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District is sponsoring this program to
encourage reading and make books available during the month of June. The media center
at all elementary schools will be open each Tuesday night beginning June 7
th
and ending
on June 28
th
. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm. From 6:00 pm 7:30 pm, your family
can play games, select books, and win prizes. We hope to see you on Tuesday evenings!
Have a great summer!
