What are vaginal suppositories and what do they do?
Vaginal suppositories are solid forms of medication that usually come in shapes that
are narrow at one end. These suppositories are usually used to treat infection or to
supply hormone.
How to use vaginal suppositories
1. Wash hands with mild soap and water, dry them with a clean towel.
2. Remove any wrapping from the suppositories.
3. If you’re using an applicator, put the suppository on the end of the applicator,
the narrow end should be pointing out.
4. Lie down on your back with both knees bent, gently insert the applicator into
vagina as far as it comfortably goes.
5. Push the applicator as far as it can go to release the suppository. If you are
using your hand, push it at least two finger joints inside the vagina.
6. You can moisten the tip of the suppository with lubricating jelly or quickly dip
the suppository in water.
7. Stay lying down for at least 15 minutes.
8. If the applicator is reusable, clean it with water and soap and then dry it
9. Throw away all other used material.
10.Wash your hands right away with soap and water.
Precautions
1. Avoid sexual intercourse or use condoms.
2. Unless under doctors order, do not use if pregnant or lactating.
3. You can use vaginal suppositories during your period.
4. Suppositories are usually used before sleep, they may leak so you can use a
sanitary pad to protect your clothing or bed linen.
5. Visit your doctor immediately if your conditions worsen or you feel itching,
heat or pain after applying.
6. Keep suppositories in dry and cool places, avoid placing them in direct
sunlight.
7. Store out of reach of children.
8. Check to see if the suppository are hard enough for insert, if not, you can
harden the suppository by placing it in the refrigerator for a few minutes or
holding it under cold water while it is still in the wrapper.
